Both seventh-grade and eighth-grade teams representing Bay Middle School in the Power of the Pen Regional competition distinguished themselves by scoring top scores to win the the second-place "Sweepstakes" award on behalf of their school.
Seventh-grade team members are Abigail Donahue, Anya Krumbine, Jossi Meaux, Kayla Poling and Kendall Thomas. Eighth-grade team members are Courtney Dixon, Elizabeth Holup, Juliana Reising and Laura Wirtz.
In addition, the seventh-grade team clinched the third-place spot in overall team standings for their grade. Then on an individual level, Kayla Poling took fourth place and Kendall Thomas took eighth place for their grade.
Eighth-grade writers also won on an individual level. Elizabeth Holup earned a second-place award for her entire grade and also won a “Best of Round” award for Round 2 with her story titled, “The Countdown of a Lifetime”. Laura Wirtz earned fourteenth-place and Juliana Reising earned fifteenth place to round out the teams other awards.
It was also learned that Jossi Meaux, grade 7, won a Best of the Best award for her piece, “Angels” from Districts (held in Columbia Station on January 30), and she will be published in the Power of the Pen Book of Winners!
Seventh- and eighth-grade runners for Regionals this year were Alex Jensen and Eric Oxsalida. The Bay Middle School Power of the Pen team is advised by seventh-grade language arts teacher Helen Goldberg.
